Friedrich Nietzsche's book The Gay Science (Die fröhliche Wissenschaft) is first published. A second edition, published in 1887 after Thus Spoke Zarathustra and Beyond Good and Evil, will be expanded significantly with a fifth section and an appendix of songs.

According to Nietzsche himself, this is the "most personal" of all his books and contains more of his poetry than any other work he publishes.
