Pope Pius VII restores the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) with the papal bull Solicitudo omnium ecclesiarum. The Jesuits had acquired a bad reputation in many nations for political intrigues and interference.

The disagreement with the Jesuits thus was never especially theological, it was political: the Jesuits were perceived as representing the political interests of the papacy, often to the detriment of secular governments.

The suppression of the Jesuits had an added benefit of allowing European governments to seize all of the Jesuit property and wealth, something that was done when Jews were expelled in the past as well.
