Jewish historian Leopold Zunz is born in Detmold.

His primary interest will be to identify some sort of "essence" of Judaism which remains constant and absolute despite the myriad of cultural changes and non-Jewish influences.

One of the most important Jewish historians of the 19th century, Zunz will be instrumental in creating the Wissenschaft des Judentums ("Science of Judaism") in 1819. This movement will be focused on the study of Jewish literature and culture with the intellectual tools created by modern scholarship.
