English religious leader Ann Lee and a small group of followers arrive in America.

Lee comes to be known as "Mother Ann" and teaches a doctrine which results in a community where celibacy and simplicity are regarded as the highest ideals.

Her sect is called the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Coming, but it comes to be known to others as the "Shakers." They have a form of ritual dancing, known as "shaking," which develops from presumed spirit-possession.
