Pope Clement XIV Declares Jews No Longer Under Jurisdiction of Inquisition

Pope Clement XIV

Pope Clement XIV declares that Jews are no longer under the jurisdiction of the Inquisition and are instead subject to the authority of Rome's cardinal vicar (Vicariato di Roma). Jews are furthermore given permission to work as artisans and even to own small factories.

Although Clement XIV is a long way from granting Jews full religious freedom and toleration, his policies are on the whole more tolerant and generous that what has been seen from many other popes.
