William Penn sails from England on the ship Welcome so he can begin work on his colony of Pennsylvania.

During the trip there is a smallpox outbreak which will kill 31 of the 100 travelers before they reach the New World. Because William Penn already had smallpox when he was three years old, he is able to minister to the sick.

They will reach New Castle at the end of October — at this time, Delaware is still part of Pennsylvania and owned by William Penn.
