Stephen IX (X) is elected pope. Originally named Frederick of Lorraine, he is the younger brother of Godfrey III, Duke of Lower Lorraine, and thus part of a family that is very influential politically.

He is already abbot of the Monte Cassino, a position which he will never give up.

The reign of Stephen IX will be short but contentious: he is a reformer, and this leads to a lot of opposition from many different areas.

Pope Stephen IX will, for example, enforce Gregorian reforms regarding clerical celibacy, which understandably won't be very popular.
