Pope Damasus II dies after less than a month — he had been installed as pope on July 17. There are rumors that he has been poisoned, but there is no evidence to corroborate this.

Born Poppo in Bavaria, Damasus II was the third German to become pope and the second German nominated to the papacy by Holy Roman Emperor Henry III.

Pope Damasus II had earlier been the bishop of Brixen as well as Bishop of Romen. After he became pope, he retained his diocese at Brixen — just the second pope in history to do so.
