Originally founded as the first and only Spartan colony, the city of Taranto in Italy is destroyed by Saracen raiders. The inhabitants have suffered for many decades from Saracen raiders; now the survivors of this attack are all enslaved and sent to Africa.

There won't be a city of Taranto until the Romans retake the site in 967. Byzantine emperor Nicephorus II Phocas will recognize the importance of a strong harbor city in southern Italy, so he will invest heavily in rebuilding Taranto; but already in 977 it will be sacked and razed by Saracens again.
