Pope Eugene II dies in Rome. More than any other pope before him, Eugene II has been under the control of the Frankish and Roman nobility.

Pope Eugene II even had to swear an oath of allegiance to Frankish emperor Louis the Pious and agree that all future popes should do the same.

When it came to theological matters, however, Pope Eugene II was able to establish greater independence; for example, he refused to agree to Louis' request that he compromise with the East on the question of iconoclasm.
