Emperor Justin I (Flavius Iustinus Augustus) dies in Bederiana (in modern-day Serbia). Originally just a peasant and swineherd, Justin rose through the ranks of the army to become emperor at the age of 70.

He ruled the Byzantine Empire for almost ten years, creating the Justinian Dynasty and changing ancient Roman traditions that had endured for centuries.

Justin was illiterate, knew only rudimentary Greek, and had no knowledge of statecraft. He did, however, know how to surround himself with people who did know how to get things done, and this is why his rule has been successful.
