Pope Sixtus II dies as a martyr when he is beheaded on order from Roman emperor Valerian. Not long before Sixtus II was elected, Emperor Valerian decreed that all Christians must participate in ceremonies honoring the Roman gods.

Sixtus has been able to avoid such ceremonies until now, but after his election as pope, Valerian issued new orders which condemned all Christian priests, bishops and decons to death. As a result, Sixtus is captured by soldiers while giving a sermon and perhaps beheaded right there.
