Authorities in Jordan reveal that they have thwarted an attempt by Al Qaida operative Abu Musab al-Zarqawi to set off massive explosions in Amman, possibly using toxic chemicals.

Possible targets include the office of the Prime Minister, Jordanian intelligence headquarters, and the American embassy. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was born in Zarqa, Jordan and became radicalized when he joined the mujaheddin fighting in Afghanistan against the Soviet invasion.

Jordanian police will raid a number of sites and seize 20 tons of chemical agents, including blistering agents and nerve gas, as well as explosives that can be used to spread those agents. Several people are arrested and confess to plotting to attack targets in Amman with chemicals; one admits that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been the planner of the attack.
