Baghdad falls to the U.S. forces which had invaded Iraq in January. In an action carrying a great deal of symbolism, US marines help Iraqi citizens topple a giant statue of Saddam Hussein located in the center of Baghdad.

At the same time, however, there is widespread looting throughout the city.
