The Vatican announces that the American cardinals have been called to Rome by Pope John Paul II. This extraordinary move was prompted by the growing crisis in the American Catholic Church over the scandal of priests who had sexually abused children and bishops who covered up the crimes after the fact.

Rev. Thomas J. Reese, editor of the Jesuit magazine America says:
