The Netherlands becomes the first country in the world to fully legalize same-sex marriage.

The law legalizing same-sex marriage was approved by the Senate on December 19, 2000, and by the lower house on September 12, 2000. Everyone who had previously entered into domester partner arrangements are automatically converted over to married couples.
