U.S. fighter planes bomb terrorist-related targets in Libya, including barracks where Muammar al-Qaddafi's headquarters are located. These strikes are a retaliation for the bombing of a Berlin disco that killed one American serviceman.
American planes from British bases and U.S. carriers in the Mediterranean Sea bomb five sites in Libya. An American F-111 with two airmen are lost and 15 Libyans die.
According to Deputy Press Secretary Larry Speakes:
"U.S. military forces have executed a series of carefully planned air strikes against terrorist-related targets in Libya. These air strikes have been completed and our aircraft are returning."
