New York Governor Rockefeller Signs Bill Repealing 1830 Ban on Abortion

Without comment or ceremony, Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller of New York signs a bill repealing the state's 1830 law banning abortion after "quickening" except to save a woman's life. This effectively allows abortion on demand up to the 24th week of pregnancy in New York State.

Similar laws will soon be passed in Alaska, Hawaii, and Washington. Unlike the bills pending in other states, however, this law will not require women to be residents of New York before obtaining an abortion.
