Gary Scott, a 24-year-old high school teacher in Jacksboro, Tennessee, is fired for for teaching his class about the theory of evolution.
The law justifying his dismissal is the Butler Act, the same law under which John T. Scopes was originally charged.
Scott will start a legal challenge the next month and will be represented by William M. Kunstler, a noted attorney from New York, who says:
"We contend that this law violates the First Amendment, particularly as affecting academic freedom, freedom of thought and belief. ...
We hope to finish the job started by Darrow in 1925"
The legal challenge will be rendered moot, though, because the following day the state senate repeals the law.
