Abd-al-Salam Muhammad Arif, President of Iraq, dies in a helicopter crash. He will be succeeded by his elder brother, Major General Abd-al-Rahman Muhamad Arif.

Abd-al-Salam Muhammad was one of the leaders of the coup which overthrew the Iraqi monarchy in 1958, with General Abd-al-Karim Qassim. Abd-al-Rahman Muhamad Arif has been chief of staff of the Iraqi army since 1963 when his brother overthrew the Ba'ath government which had assassinated Abd-al-Karim Qassim.
