Judge J. Gilbert Pendergast dismisses a lawsuit brought by Madalyn Murray (later O'Hair) to force the end of required Bible readings and recitations of the Lord's Prayer in public schools.
According to Pendergast, Murray is only trying to "drive every concept of religion out of the public school system" and, if successful, "only atheism" would remain.
Murray will appeal to the Maryland Court of Appeals and lose. She will then appeal up to the U.S. Supreme Court and they will accept her case, combining it with a similar one in Pennsylvania. In Abington Township School District v. Schempp, the Supreme Court will rule 8-1 against mandatory recitation of Bible verses and the Lord's Prayer in public schools.
