Nazis Begin Evacuating Inmates From Mauthausen Concentration Camp

Nazi officials begin evacuating inmates from the Mauthausen concentration camp in order to prevent them from falling into the hands of advancing Soviet forces. The purpose of this camp was to exterminate through forced labor and the death toll was between 120,000 and 320,000.

The RSHA (Reichssicherheitshauptant) referred to Mauthausen by the nickname Knochenmühle, or "bone-grinder".
