Germany's powerful Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber of Bavaria urges Catholic priests to show "civic obedience to the duly constituted state authority" of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party.

Never a Nazi himself, Faulhaber is nevertheless an ardent nationalist who promotes peaceful cooperation with what he sees as the lawful government in Germany. He sometimes criticizes the Nazis, but only when it comes to policies which directly affect Catholics; even then, he avoids going public with his thoughts.
