In Munich, anarchists and socialists announce the creation of a Soviet Republic in the German state of Bavaria (Bayerische Räterepublik or Münchner Räterepublik). This only lasts a few days until communists seize power. The communists' government lasts a bit longer because they are better organized, but even their attempt to create a new government system ends in less than a month.

Most of the support for this lies in Munich; in the more rural areas of Bavaria there is far more opposition. In Franconia, the following protest is issued on April 9:

"The whole population of Northern Bavaria is warned against allowing itself to be intimidated through fear of a vanishing minority, mainly consisting of persons predominantly of a foreign race.

Bavaria is on the edge of a precipice and if it is not preserved from a downfall everything is lost. Bavaria will then become the prey of fratricides, plunderers, and famine."
