Karl Marx receives his doctorate from the University of Jena. Entitled The Difference Between the Democritean and Epicurean Philosophy of Nature, Marx's doctoral thesis is about how traditional theology should submit to modern philosophy.

Karl Marx has been studying at the University of Berlin, but he doesn't expect that the radical ideas of his thesis will find much acceptance there. Thus he submits it to the more liberal University of Jena.
