Joseph Smith and other Mormon leaders being held prisoner escape and join up with Mormons in Illinois.

Two previous attempts to escape had been unsuccessful, but by this point their jailers had come to conclude that holding them was unjust.

So they agree to look the other way while Joseph Smith and other Mormon leaders escape.

Joseph Smith and other Mormon leaders have been in prison since they surrendered to authorities November 1, 1938, ending the Missouri Mormon War. Because of persecution and distrust, Mormon communities in Missouri had started arming themselves and, before long, armed conflict broke out.
