James Mill — philosopher, historian, and father of John Stuart Mill — is born in England. It will be his friendship with Jeremy Bentham that causes James Mill to dedicate himself to the development and spread of Bentham's philosophy of utilitarianism.

He adopts Bentham's ideas completely and unreservedly, even going so far as to raise his son John Stuart Mill within the context of a utilitarian household.
