Friedrich Bouterwek is born in Germany. Originally a disciple of Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Bouterwek develops a critique of Kant's work which moves him away from Kantian philosophy entirely.

According to Bouterwek, human reason cannot conceive of a "thing-in-itself." All that's accessible is an inconceivable "something-in-general" and any statement about it must involve perceptions of phenomena.
