Jews had been banned from France since 1394, but at the beginning of the 17the century some gradually started to return.

To counter this, King Louis XIII issues an edict on this date making it a crime for any Christian to shelter Jews or even talk to Jews. The penalty is death the confiscation of all property.

Not everyone agrees with this intolerance and some areas, like Bordeaux, refuse to put the edict into effect.
