Marcellus II is elected pope. Pope Marcellus II will have the distinction of having had one of the shortest papal reigns in the entire history of the Roman Catholic Church: 22 days. He is also one of only two popes to have ever retained their original name after election.

Pope Marcellus II plans on initiating an ambitious program for reform and hopes to work against abuses such as nepotism and excessively lifestyles of church officials — but he suffers a stroke before anything can be done.
