Saint Ignatius of Loyola is elected the first General of the Jesuit Order.

A Spanish nobleman, he is a zealous and passionate defender of Church doctrine and his new order becomes an important part of the Counter-Reformation of the Roman Catholic Church when he helps found the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) with Francis Xavier.
