Under the command of Alexander Nevsky of Novgorod, Russian forces defeat the Livonian Order of the Teutonic Knights in the Battle of the Ice on Lake Peipus.

Fought almost entirely on the ice of a frozen lake, the Roman Catholic knights of the Teutonic order are defeated so soundly that this marks the end of their military campaigns against pagan and Eastern Orthodox Christians.
