In the bull Divina dispensatione Pope Eugene III approves of the Crusading into Spain and the beyond the northeastern frontier of Germany.
Originally Pope Eugene III was looking for volunteers to launch a Crusade into the Holy Lands to recapture Edessa, but after hearing about the pagan Slavs he agrees to having two crusades.
This papal bull declares that the spiritual rewards for both Crusades will be equal, thus crusading against pagan Slavs is equal to Crusading against Muslims. The attack against the Slavs will be undertaken primarily by Saxon leaders.
St. Bernard Clairvaux writes
"We expressly forbid that for any reason whatsoever they should make a truce with these people [the Wends] ... until such time as ... either their religion or their nation be destroyed."
