Pope Eugene III issues the papal bull Militia Dei ("soldiers of god") to consolidate the independence of the Order of the Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (Knights Templar) from local ecclesiastical control or influence.

This bull grants the Knights Templar the right to collect church tithes from members, collect burial fees, bury their own dead, and consecrate and manage their own cemeteries. The right of the Knights Templar to move around Europe freely, ignoring borders and local political authorities, is reinforced. This bull contributing to the ability of the Knights Templar to accumulate massive wealth and political power.
