Pope Gregory VII is elected. Gregory will seek important reforms in the Church, one of the most important of which will be his insistence on papal primacy over secular rulers when it comes to the investiture of clergy.

This, in turn, leads to the Investiture Conflict — one of the most serious conflicts between church and state during the Middle Ages.
