Pope Alexander II dies in Rome. Although he entered the papacy with a strong desire to reform the church and the curia, opposition from powerful forces within the church prevented this.

Pope Alexander II was hampered further by the fact that the elector cardinals failed to get support of the German imperial court.

This led to the nomination of Honorius II at the council of Basel as a rival pope. Eventually a German court ruled in favor of Alexander and a a council at Mantua deposes Honorius II. However, the divisions created by this conflict remained and Alexander's papacy was always under a cloud.
