Victor II is installed as the first pope after the final split between Western and Eastern Christian churches.

At this time, however, people see this as just one in a long line of disagreements between West and East so no one recognizes just how serious matters really are — and this means that Pope Victor II doesn't perceive healing the rift as very important.

As the fourth and final German pope to be nominated by Holy Roman Emperor Henry III, Pope Victor II will have more pressing matters to concern himself with — like for example the threat of the Normans to take over Rome and the papal lands. There are eight German popes over the course of the Catholic Church's history, but Victor II is one of only three from the territory of modern-day Germany. The other two are Pope Clement II and Pope Benedict XVI.
